View Full Version : ds-230 questions confusion
I have searched both this site and visa journey and have read a lot about the ds-230 but I still have questions.
This is the list from NVC web site when you choose Ciudad Juarez.
Birth Certificate
Court and Prison Records
Deportation Documentation
Marriage Certificate
Marriage Termination Documentation
Military Records
Photocopy of Valid Passport Biographic Data Page
Police Certificate(s)
Questions.
Birth Certificate
I know it needs to be original or certified copy. I only have 1. Will I get this one back? Will I need another one for when we go to Juarez? I am a little scared sending it away.
Court and Prison Records
You only need this if has conviction, correct?
Deportation Documentation
Catch and Release doesn't count, correct?
Marriage Certificate
Again original/certified copy. Will I need another for Juarez?
Marriage Termination Documentation & Military Records
These doesn't apply to me.
Photocopy of Valid Passport Biographic Data Page
Just the page with picture.
Police Certificate(s)
This is what I'm really confused about. What is the difference between this and court and prison records, if any? Does everyone need this? Is this for the US or Mexico? I think I read somewhere that they are not available for Mexico? If I have to get it for the US, I know you go to the police station and get a report. But what information do they ask for.

hi amber...
like you, i only had one original birth certificate of hubby and i had to send it off. the good news is that when i sent it off, i called my mother in law and she sent some out, just in case we need it at the interview. For marriage certificate, i just sent the certified copy you get at the registers office. i think you will get everything back but until the day of the interview not before. for the police certificates, im not sure....but someone will chime in...
Also very important, dont forget you will need two passport pics.....

i asked the same question about the police reports as well. for mexico police reports are not available. if your husband has ever been in prison in mexico those records are available. It also says in the ds-230 instructions that current and former residents of the united states do not need police certificates from the us. if your hubby has had any problems with the police tickets, arrests etc you will need to get certified copies from the courts that state the charges, disposition dates etc. I recommend getting 2 certified copies of each ticket/arrest so you have one just in case the nvc does not forward something to cdj. Hope this helps:wink:

You don't need them for Mexico or the U.S. My husband even had traffic tickets that we didn't provide copies of. We did take the copies to cdj with us but they told my husband they didn't care about that.

Laurel Scott's office advised me to obtain an *original long form* and it needs to be translated into English which can be done by a friend or family member that is fluent in the language and they must state on the translation similar to the following:
I am bilingual in the English and Spanish language and am competent to make this translation and this translation is a true and complete translation of the original document.
This translation page itself does NOT have to be notarized by the translator.
Thanks for your answers.
However, I still want to clarify for the birth certificate. I need 2 original copies then???? One to send to NVC with DS-230 and one to take with me to CDJ???? Is this correct???
I'm sorry, to me it just sounds stupid to have to get 2 birth certificate. I mean, doesn't the paperwork that I have been sending to NVC get forwarded to CDJ when the case is complete??? Won't they have a the original birthcertificate in CDJ when we go for the interview?? Sorry just venting. We just had the birth certificate mailed to us from Mexico and I didn't know we needed two. Now we are going to have to ask his family to go get another one.
I do have 2. One is really old. The Mexican consulate wouldn't accept it. It is the long one that he got when he was born. The one we just got is probably a certified copy. Could I send the certified copy to NVC and take the old original to CDJ??? Or would you ask family to send another???

hi amber...
i sent the old one, the long one, the first copy we had to the nvc and they accepted it. I have a new one, with a bar code to take. you dont need it, but it is safe to take it just in case. imagine you are at the consulate and they ask you for it....its better to take one, just in case.....
