Hubby and I applied for an apartment and they are supposed to let us know this afternoon. We REALLY want to live there. The location is perfect in terms of school/commuting, the rent is reasonable, and it works for us in so many ways. We've been living with my Mom about an hour out in the middle of nowhere and I'm SO ready to have our own place and stop the daily commute over a crazy mountain road. Not to mention the daily accordion concerts. But that is another story....
I should find out this afternoon. Send out your positive vibes, people! :jumpy:

sending you positive energy :D
I'm in property management (at least until April 14th ) and have seen the progress through the years in finding faster ways to approve applicants and be a little bit more leniant with regards to credit and other issues. Like in the apartment community I manage, most responses come back within minutes. I pray you get the good news soon!!!!

You know, it's funny. This time around looking for apartments with my hubby seems so much more challenging. People don't call back, or they rent to other folks. Now granted, the housing market is in the toilet and there's a lot of competition for places right now. But I wonder if I'm just being paranoid, or is it because there's a bit of discrimination going on? The manager of this apartment was supposed to get back to me last Friday, and when I called to check it she said that something had come up, she hadn't had a chance to look at it, blah blah. Then she says "Oh, but I did have one question....what's this about immigration?!?". Maybe I should start lying on my application, but I can't think of a better way to explain why my husband didn't work for over a year and we moved out into the middle of nowhere for no apparent reason....
Have any of you felt this way? I used to be able to get any apartment I wanted, and my credit was worse back then! This is the first place my husband and I are looking for together (he moved into my old place before we got married).

That is shady! Not really surprising though in today's climate. I don't think you are being overly paranoid.

OH, I hope not. Knowing what you have gone through with doing the right thing to become legal makes it much more a positive factor than a negative factor.
Sending good vibes to you. I know how excited you are to get your own place. I so hope this works for you. I can just hear the excitement in your words. Good Luck!

Gdalicia, hubby and I haven't had any problems renting. We have pretty much been approved wherever we apply but we live in Tucson not Cali lol.
I would def omit the immigration stuff that just always freaks people out. I would just say he was out of the country and that's it. If they ask then you can answer. :)

Sending good vibes!!
Just mention 2 words: FAIR HOUSING
And, they'll leave you alone.
Tell them, "I know my rights. I know my fair housing guidelines."
Have you read my blog about apartments yet? I should add to it saying that if you see irregularities with the application process, run away now! It will only get worse AFTER you move in (hopefully I'm wrong, but you get the picture).
They shouldn't be taking that long to approve you. That's ridiculous. I wish you well. I'll be praying for you. :)

Well, it's not looking good...they have not called. :gaah:
I was so hoping for that place. I even called them in one last desperate act but had to leave a message. Oh well, keep looking I guess. Blah.

Well, actually it has been a process over the last few weeks, and we closed today. Not bad, going from over 8.25% down to 5.875%. Approval was quick, as the mortgage company figured out one guy making a higher payment would be more easily done by both him and his wife with a lower payment.

Yes, and it's going to cut at least $50 off the house payment each month, also taking two years off the original mortgage. Things are finally working out for us, but we would have been lost without my parents (we have to be closing in to almost $15K owed to relatives at this point, and I consider us lucky). This is the house I moved into when I was 4 years old, and I'm happy to have my family here with me in it.

Have you called her? I would totally call and ask what is taking so long and if she said you aren't approve tell you you want to know why.

Actually, I called last night around 5pm and she didn't pick up. I wonder if it's just not a priority for her since the person just gave notice and it won't even be vacant for another month. But yes, if they are not interested I'd like to know so I can mooooove on.
AND she hasn't called any of my references, because I checked with them. ***?

Update: I called today and talked to the Manager. She said that the owner is concerned about my hubby only having been at his job for a month. I told her I understood that, but that if she would call his references several of them are people that he worked with FOR YEARS and who know us very well. I also told her to call my former landlord. She said that she would call them and resubmit the application to the owner tomorrow when she goes to the office. Bottom line is that they saw that immigration thing on there and decided no way. I won't be stupid enough to put that down again.
Grrrr this makes me so mad. I'm considering calling the Fair Housing folks on them if they don't get back to me. We paid $25 each for a credit report that I'm sure they haven't run...

Why, the lovely Bay Area of California of course. Don't you all just want to pack it up and move out here??? :waiting:
I'm so depressed, guys. Hubby and I can afford to pay around $1500 a month. There is nothing, just nothing. :dunno:
ratito921
04-03-2008, 01:00 AM
WOW! that's like the prices around here if you want a decent house to rent you'll have to pay at least $1600 plus, no roommates, single family, no smoking, no drinking, no pets first last months rent and deposit and while $1600 maybe cheap to some around here I haven't had a job yet where I make more than $2000 a month. I've been back home for 5 years too.
gdalicia I hope you are able to find something. Ever thought of relocating? Could be worth it.

And i thought my grandpa was charging too much for a 3 bed 2 bath laundry room living room and kitchen on an acre of land $900 per month

I'd love to relocate. Problem is my daughter is starting middle school and her Dad probably wouldn't like it too much if we moved.
And hubby loves it here. Go figure....
Is there anywhere left in the US that actually has good job growth AND affordable housing? If I did leave I'd have to go with a job offer, that's the only thing that would convince my hubby.

Update: I was driving home tonight, generally feeling sorry for myself, when the lady from the apartment calls! She said that she has called my references, got a great recommendation from my last landlord, and is just waiting for employment verification. She said that she is going to recommend to the owners that they approve our application and that they usually go with whoever she picks...meaning, we probably got the place! :yay:
