View Full Version : Tigo... cell phone problems.

Ok, so my hubby just got back to Honduras, and he chose cell phone service through Tigo, because they have more sales on minutes. I don't know if Tigo only provides services to Honduras, or if they are ALSO a provider for for other countries in Central America, Mexico, etc.
The problem is that I cannot call him! I can send him text messages, and I can call OTHER people in his family who also have Tigo as their cellular service provider, and he can also call ME. I just can't call him... it's getting really frustrating. It costs us BOTH money when he calls me. If I call my hubby, then it only costs one of us money because all incoming calls in Honduras are free-- where as in the US, we get charged for airtime no matter what.
My husband went to the Tigo store, and they said that the problem must be on MY side, since he can receive calls from others. Well, the truth is that he can only receive calls from other people who are calling from Honduras. I called AT&T today (my provider) and they were very courteous-- not blaming anyone for the problem. They asked several questions, ran multiple tests, did a lot of trouble shooting, and the problem is still not fixed. I reallllllly think the problem is Tigo, and I don't know what to do. They will not give my husband his money back, and he is going to try to change his number on Monday to see if that fixes it.
Has anyone else had any problems of this nature with Tigo or AT&T? If so, how did were they resolved? Does anyone have a suggestion for a DIFFERENT provider?

Hey Corazoncita...mine has TIGO...how are you dialing the number? 011 504 123 4567? The reason I ask is they added a 9 or a 3 before the number. So when I call hubby I have to dial 011 504 9123 4567. So in reality it is now a 8 digit number versus a 7!
And yes, they always run the things with the cards where you buy like 100 LPS and they give you 100 LPS free so when they run those he buys alot. Just tell hubby to be careful when he puts the cards in. I think hubby said that it will only allow you to put 2 or 3 cards in at a time or it will "lock" the phone and you will have to take it back to the store for them to unlock it.

Hmmm, that is weird.....I can call from house and my cell (I have Nextel)!! Do you get a message when you call or is it telling you to leave a VM?

It either gives me one of those super-fast busy signals, or it says "Your international call cannot be completed as dialed. Please check the number and try your call again."

Corazoncita it does sound like it could be your phone. Have you tried calling his number from another phone? I have had that problem from my house phone but never my cell. Also it was raining those days and it is very hard to get through when they have bad weather, I have had alot of trouble this week. Hope that helps. Call your phone company again and ask them to call the number. It does not cost much for him to try another chip-he might be able to get someone to give him one. Many of them have multiple chips because they buy new phones and keep the old chip. Tigo is the best if you guys can get it straight, many US cell phones cannot send text msgs to Claro. I have Virgin Mobile cell because it only costs .35/min to call him. I pay $35/month for 300 anytime and 1000 n/w. I use the phone mostly to talk to him. They have plans with more minutes and unlimited n/w. I have tried many others and this one I liked. I ordered a free phone and they do not charge you activation, no contract.
Noelle, I had to get international calling added to my service to call MX. Did AT&T tell you that you have that? or even need it? Call me and give me hs number...I'll try calling. We can see if he can at least get a call from here

I have international calling plan with Sprint but when husband returns to Mexico we're going with the Sprint/Nextell walkie talkie phone that has a plan of unlimited walkie talkie calls to Mexico.
I've got to check out the Tigo because I'd never heard of it. I guess they have that in Mexico? I'm glad y14gemini gave us the heads up on putting too many cards in. (I don't have a clue about that though since I've never seen one.)

That's exactly what happened to me! I had to specifically ask/tell them to add international calling on my Nextel account.

Well, I have international calling. I have had that feature for over 3 years. I pay $3.99 a month for discounted international rates, and I pay 37 cents per minute.
I have never had a problem calling his family members' cell phones in Honduras. I can call his mom, all his sisters, his brothers.... everyone but him. They all have Tigo.
I just PMed y14gemini my hubby's phone numbedr and she is going to try to call him.
nineten-- that is what my friend did. She got a Nextel phone because she had unlimited minutes to Mexico as long as she used the walkie-talkie function... $9.99 per month! That is soooo cool! I am jealous! I think I told rkzal about it, and she called to see if they offer that option in Honduras, but as of yet, they don't.

OK! Update- y14gemini just called him (bless her heart!) and was able to get through to my hubby! YAY!
However, I am still not able to get through... this is good, because now I have singled out the problem and I now know it is my phone company's issue. I will be on the phone with them first thing when I get off work tomorrow.

I've been looking on Tigo's site and it looks like they have a DSL plan using their wireless phones that can connect to PC or palms... similar to what's offered in the US for areas that don't have wired service out in the country!!
does anyone have any info on this??? I'll do some more research, but was wondering if anyone has used this service.
From what I understand, rkzal and corazoncita's hubbys just get the cards to make calls but all incoming calls to HN are free??

When I call my hubby (he has Tigo also) the calls are free. He is only using his minutes when he makes the outgoing calls!
