We decided to disable the reputation option since it didn't give us the results we were hoping for.
We are working to work out the kinks and maybe it will be back enabled.

Well, you are one of the few ones. That was indeed how it should be used but it became more of a contest who could give the most.

I thought the reputation was a good feature when it was used as it was intended, i.e. to thank users for a particularly helpful post. I agree with the decision to disable it, b/c it was being abused. Points should not be handed out just for the fun of it or b/c someone is bored. That defeats the purpose.

They weren't only used just for fun. I gave tons out when good information was given or when I agreed with a poster. I also gave some out to say hi or to give some encouragement to a poster when they were down. Just FYI. lol

I think most people were using them correctly, but the ones that weren't ruined for everyone.

:sorry: I'm guilty of the bored part. I really am sorry and feel bad about this. I hope those who truly deserved the points forgive me for doing this. :crying:I hope no one holds bad feelings towards me. I guess it did get out of hand and we (me in particular) should be punished. I really really feel bad now. Uhm, I'm going to logg off for a while. Before I get bashed. :(

Don't give yourself 40 lashes just yet. LOL We are a very forgiving bunch. :D ...and don't usually bash too much. This is not VJ. LOL
Not to worry. Marie will come up with something else new and fun to get us going. :yay2:

What? No one is bashing anyone! And you are certainly not the only person who was giving out points for fun. Don't feel bad - come back. :)

I agree!!! If they come back in the future and are used correctly it really could help new users see which posts are seen as more helpful, credible, useful, knowledgable, etc.....according to other users.

Auntlily, we don't bash here! That is not what this site is about! We are here to help and holding someone's actions against them would totally defeat the purpose of it!

I've been thinking...the idea for the reputation is great, but the use was not always consistent....Would it be different if each member had a limited number of points to give away (ie X number per day or month). I think that could help to drive the right behavior, but I have absolutely no idea if it's possible technically. Side question...how's the site doing with donations...??? Has the donation button helped?
MendozaQH
03-28-2008, 05:36 PM
Just a suggestion :daydream:.......can you set up a way for the member's to see what post each person received points for? I mean, it is great that the person could see it, but if there was a way for everyone to see why a person received their reputation.......good or bad
Marie

You should have been able to in the usercp
I think there was a limit on how much you can give out but I'm not sure what it was.
Donations: I do have an updated amount on my end.

The idea behind it was indeed to give points for helpfull posts CONCERNING immigration primarily, not for posting a picture. Again, the system was flawed to start with and it will be back.
The number of total posts is helpfull but if we are honest, posts such as lol, thank you, welcome though they add to the counter are no indiction of how helpfull a member is.
We can have a member with 200 posts, 80% the ones mentioned above (which is all fine with us, keep em coming) and a member with 50 posts but all very informative. In theory the one with the 50is more usefull to the new member looking for answers and not (yet) friendship.
Points handed out for usefull immigration posts would make the it easier for the newbie to rely on information hence stay active at the site, which was one the thoughts behind this whole thing.
No one in particular is to blame for pulling it back.

No, I know that you as an individual could see why you received the points, but other people couldn't. I was thinking of it as a way for others to see why you received the points that you did.
Or instead of putting it on the person's ID, put the reputation next to the actual post.

Ya I think this is a good idea...that way no one can abuse the system :)

Could there be like two categories of points? One set of "immigration knowledge" points, and one set for general "cool" points? That way people who want to give points for posting cute pictures can add "cool" points (or whatever) and people who want to give points for useful immigration info can do so as well, and then users can see who is a helpful source of immigration info.
I don't even know if this system allows for such a thing, but I've seen it on certain social networking sites...
