I'm concerned for my family's safety. How do we avoid being victims of crime?
How do we protect our home?
What should we do to make sure we don't get sick from the food/water?
If we do get sick or need medical care, what should we do?

Not to get anybody worried that will visit CDJ soon, but the small town (Palomas) to the west of Juarez just had two of the remaining police force run off before the Police Chief requested asylum at the U.S. PoE. There has been four murders recently, and an armed robbery at a dentist's office while the mayor from the town on the U.S. side was getting a root canal. By all accounts it is warring drug cartels fighting for the territory.
Juarez is big and busy enough to blend in (but still has had shootings/killings directed at the police), but Palomas is much smaller. I definately don't recommend driving around in black or white luxury SUVs with tint on the windows (one of the targets in Palomas was a white Escalade). As I have it, low-key Americans and poor Mexicans aren't targets, they want richer winnings.
The Mexican military is expected to come into Palomas soon to hold the peace. I'm not going to go to that area until I see it settle down more. Even for the trip we will probably do in Mexico for the Summer I will be quite a bit more cautious.

I avoid being a victim, don't go out to place you don't know at night! Make sure you are with a group, such as family. In much of Mexico, the military is controlling a majority of the highways. While driving, we were searched in every state that we entered at least twice. Listen to the military and do what they ask.
Mexico City- Make sure you know what days you are able to drive on there, otherwise they can tow your car. Check local papers before entering!
Remember just because you see the police, that doesn't mean that they are honest.
