Have you guys ever thought that maybe if we can't win on immigration reform. We could at least try to bring back the bill that allowed USC spouses to adjust status without having to leave the US?

This was ok before 9-11 and people didn't have to get separated from their loved ones to be able to adjust.

What are your thoughts on this? :shy:

Doesn't the adjustment of status only work for people who have been here for like a year or less only? Or am I wrong?

Before 9-11 you could adjust regardless of how long you have been in the country as long as you were married to a USC.

That no longer is the case. After 9-11 they got rid of it. So sad!

Petitions!
Petitions! Has anyone thought about starting one? I wonder if the government would ever consider a new bill if enough voters across the country where to show support of a bill to allow husbands/wives to adjust status with out leaving the country. If the family member just paid a fine and then were allowed to adjust here. I don't think the general public has any idea that families are being separated for sometime years. I think that there needs to be a way for this to come to light. Everyone I have told my story to has said the same thing "your married, why can't he just get a green card". Somehow we need to show the true face of immigration and not just the stereotypes that the media has been showing. We need a grass-root movement to help our cause.

That's exactly what I believe and happens to me often. I don't go telling people my legal status but the few that I trust are surprised to learn that being married to a USC doesn't grant me legal status.

I think people do need to know about this. And it would definitely help to bring back the bill that allowed spouses of USC to adjust status without having to leave the country.

How much pain it would be avoided for so many families in our situation.

I'm up for fines and whatever else they require if that means I won't be separated from my husband and daughter.

My family is shocked that the country cares so little for it citizens. My parents are upset at the thought of my children being separated from their entire family if my husband is denied because I have told them that I will not allow my children to live with out their father.

Fines would be great! I would pay any amount to keep my family together.

Let's start something. I am good friends with our Congressman (Henry Cuellar). I could call him or email him and ask him to see if anything of that sort could be done.

I think we should at least try something with this. If we wait until we get an immigration reform many families will be separated in the process and who really knows when both sides will reach an agreement. It could take years.

I think that we need to be better organized and get the information out about what is happening to our families. We are the ones being effected the most. My whole life is about my family and trying to find a solution to this. I just wish that I could find some one in the government to help that would really be willing to help us and not just talk about it. The general public may change their thinking if they were to see the faces of children who are being separated from their fathers/mothers because of a defective law. Things need to change and I think that we need to find a solution ourselves and not hope that the government will change overnight and decide that we are worth helping out. We need to let our voices be heard over the racists and people who couldn't care less about some poor immigrant. This is our lives and we need to let the country know what is happening to us and force a change in policy. We can not stand to the side and let this country ignore us and our families any longer.

What would be the first step for us to get the ball rolling on this. Should we all contact our reps. Should we gather signatures. Lets start throwing out ideas and see what would be the best thing to do.

I have written to my Congressman already. I think we can start with our local news. I got into a forum in one and where people are talking about Immigration/Border Security I posted a bit of my story and I'm trying to get people to see that families are being separated. People do think that because you're a citizen you should be able to help your spouse so they don't realize what is going on. We need to talk to friends and family about it so they can talk to more people. Maybe contacting some groups like Catholic Charities, La Raza, and many others pro immigrant groups. We all need to take action. There is a lot of negativity out there and we need to over power it. Good luck to everyone.

I think the media would be good to bring into the picture as well as the lawmakers.

After all they are the ones that will create and then pass the bill.

Maybe collect evidence of how much families have suffered while being separated. Tell the stories of those who have been through the process, of those waiting outside the country while their spouses are left working here to some how cover the bills.

Talking about 9c and how it is not fair that somebody who didn't had a choice has to be punished for their parent's decisions etc.

We have too many different stories but the final result is only one. Families are being separated for months and years and something needs to be done about it.

Hey guys I agree totally if we could write something up forward to as many people possible then we all forward to all our representatives, Governors and so forth maybe even MR. Chertoff himself. Has anybody heard of the lawsuit AIL filed against the denials of 212 waivers?
