Well my MIL's visa was approved this morning- they'll be mailing it to her in two weeks. She'll be here to visit when we go to our AOS interview!
She took a copy of the deed to her house & some land she owns, her bank statements, pay stubs going back 15+ years, a copy of her contract from work and her health insurance that also covers her elderly mother.
I also wrote a letter saying that she'd be coming to visit us and that we'd be responsible for her while she was in the US. I included a photocopy of my SS card & passport and Mr. Adriane's SS card, EAD card, visa & AOS appointment letter.
At the interview they looked through everything, and asked if Mr. Adriane (her son) was working. She gave them the photocopy of his EAD card and that was apparently sufficient.
It seems weird, because the instructions say you don't need documents from your family in the US- but it does seem to have helped.... Anyway, she got it!
The next step: Sending my EXTREMELY rural MIL through a connection at Houston's Intercontinental Bush Airport!:erm:

Congratulations!!! These are done only in Mexico City, correct? I am bugging my husband about getting visas for his parents. They're such procrastinators, I swear!

No, actually, her appointment was in the consulate in Merida. It's based on what state you live in- it was still a 9 hour drive for her, though.

Ooh, more details please Adriane. How do you make appointments, etc. Maybe we should have a sticky about this. I'm sure many of us would like our in-laws to visit.

Wow, awesome, Adriane!
Yeah, good luck with the IAH part...even my 10 year-old students love to complain about connections at that airport :ah: :erm:

thats so wonderful adriene congrats
My husband was asking me about this the other day for his parents.
They live in Guanajuato, so I wonder where they would have to go for an interview?
I really know nothing on how it works. His dad own some land. He has his fields for some sort of seed that keep him busy all summer. Plus they still have one son and a daughter in Mexico that live at home. I know they have money in the bank, but I don't know how much. They have no desire to live in the US, but I wonder if that would be enough to persuade their interviewer?
Congats for your MIL!!!

That's great! As for the airport. I'd make sure she has copies of everything so if she gets lost she can find someone to help her out.
My in-laws are not at all interested in living in the US, but they are PRs. They use thier PR as tourist visas. I keep telling them they're going to get "caught" one of these days and get the PR taken away.............. I hope not.

That is great news! Thanks for sharing..someday I hope to convince my MIL to come visit us....
I feel you-with regards to sending your MIL to a connecting flight through Houston! My mother is not the brightest person when it comes to directions. Last year, I sent her to Puerto Rico on a connecting flight through Houston. (For those that don't know, she has a mental disability). I was all paranoid that she would get all lost there. I printed out everything I could to keep her from getting lost. I found a map to the Houston Terminals on their website. I verified gate numbers, etc. I highlighted which way to go. Told her if she got lost anyway, to talk to an employee and to always read the signs. In the end, she told me she made the flight and that my maps worked like a charm! Phew!

That's great news Adriane... specially after a 9-hr drive.
This gives me some hope for my husband's grandparents. We'll be visiting them in May and plan on bringing all the information they might need to get a tourist visa.
Thanks for sharing.
